Commonwealth Jewish Society and Trust (CJST)

The Council was created by the unanimous agreement of Jewish leaders from 16 Commonwealth countries in 1982. It now contains members from 37 different countries.

The Council aimes to provide links between Commonwealth Jewish communities and provide a a central representative voice for the Commonwealth Jewish communities in matters of concern to those communities within the family of the Commonwealth and in particular for the preservation of their religious and cultural heritage.
The Council seeks ways to strengthen Commonwealth Jewish communities in accordance with their special needs and wishes; and to provide mutual help and co-operation.

The council  works in concert and association with the World Jewish Congress.

Some of the council's activities include: the creation of regional links between Commonwealth communities; giving assistance to communities in coping with problems caused by isolation from sources of Jewish religious requirements; and the strengthening of religious life of commonwealth countries, including assistance with the provision of religious and educational facilities and leadership; the relief of poverty; and where appropriate the preparation of contingency plans.
