Mark Collins BA MBA PhD

Dr Mark Collins is Director of the Commonwealth Foundation, an intergovernmental body that works with civil society organizations to promote democracy, advance sustainable development and foster inter-cultural understanding across the Commonwealth.

Throughout his life, Mark has had been committed to international development and environmental sustainability.  After obtaining a degree in Natural Sciences at Wadham College, Oxford University, Mark studied Ecology at Imperial College, University of London and was awarded a doctorate in 1977.  Later in his career Mark achieved a Master’s in Business Administration from the Open University.
Mark’s career has spanned research, management and executive responsibilities in non-governmental and intergovernmental organisations across the world.  His work began with ten years of ecological research in the forests of Southeast Asia and the grasslands of West and East Africa.  During this time, Mark was employed by the UK’s Overseas Development Administration and the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology. 
 
On returning to Britain, he moved into conservation with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.  Mark became Director of the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in 1994 and spearheaded its designation as an office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).  He continued working with UNEP in the UK and Kenya until 2005 when he took up his current post. 
 
Mark has published more than 130 articles and papers, written and edited eleven books, and has made numerous contributions to the press, television and radio. He plays an active role in public life, and has served on many international committees and voluntary bodies. He is a Commonwealth Scholarships Commissioner and sits on the boards of the Round Table and Friends of the Commonwealth.   
 
In 2000 Mark was awarded the Royal Geographical Society Busk Medal for Scientific Discovery and Research in recognition of his work.
