Key questions
The research project "Putting Culture First", launched in March 2008 by the Commonwealth Foundation, will address some of the following key questions:
- How does good cultural policy influence development, and in what ways? What exactly does good cultural policy look like, and how can cases of best practice be shared across the Commonwealth?
- What does 'civil society' look like in the field of culture and development? Do cultural coalitions and networks of cultural practitioners constitute civil society, or can it be extended to a broader development-oriented audience?
- How else can culture influence development? In what ways can 'culture' best be used as a tool and an instrument for development and governance?
- What are the cultural prerequisites for good development practice? How do we make development 'culturally sustainable'?
- How else is culture important for development? Does it need to be only instrumental, or is there something more intrinsic about culture's role in development? If so, how can it be conceptualised and promoted amongst different audiences?
A major report will be published in November 2008.
