Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards

The Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards, sponsored and organised by the Commonwealth Foundation, aim to increase mutual understanding between people from different Commonwealth cultures through artistic exchange.

The Awards are intended to help winning artists explore their art in another Commonwealth country by working alongside other artists or within an arts institution.

Through the Awards awareness and appreciation of different cultures is increased and artists and craftspeople acquire artistic, personal and organisational skills, while sharing their own skills and talents.

The Foundation established the Awards in 1987 to address the isolation in which many artists work and the difficulty of travelling professionally outside their own countries. More than 80 artists from over 30 countries have since received an award.

Aims

The specific aims of the Awards are:

- to increase awareness and appreciation of different cultures among Commonwealth artists and craftspeople;

- to enable artists and craftspeople to develop new artistic skills;

- to enable artists and craftspeople to develop personal and organisational skills;

- to enable artists and craftspeople to share their skills with others in their host country;

- to increase knowledge and understanding of art and culture in other Commonwealth countries amongst arts organisations and communities.

The Awards are part of the Culture and Diversity Programme of the Commonwealth Foundation.
