Projects
Friends are currently raising funds for two projects - an outreach project to encourage reading amongst children in developing countries in conjunction with the Commonwealth Writers Prize, and a capacity building project in Zanzibar that will benefit whole communities.
If you can read this you're lucky….
A new and exciting initiative for 2008 will see the introduction of an outreach programme of the Commonwealth Writers Prize. This will see prize winners taking part in reading workshops in developing countries, in an effort to inspire greater things from local writers, particularly those whose backgrounds prevent them achieving their full potential.

And it will also provide on line classroom resources for teachers to encourage children to read more.
An additional element will see the linking up of reading groups around the Commonwealth to share ideas and encourage a greater participation in reading.
The outreach programme will look to start in the Caribbean or the Pacific during 2008 and branch out from there.
A greater number of national authors in print increases the opportunities for young people to read and helps provide role models to encourage others.
Friends are raising funds to support this project by providing the resources to produce reading guides, school materials and workshops.

Pemba Panorama, Zanzibar.
Three sub projects fall within this programme, run as an outreach activity attached to the Zanzibar Film Festival.
Many women in the Mkoani district of Zanzibar live in very difficult circumstances. This programme aims to train them and give them life skills that will enable them to start cottage industries using recycled raw materials, cook more nutritious meals to improve their family's health and start small businesses leading to greater self sufficiency.

Intensive fishing of the shallow seas off Chake has meant local fishermen are struggling to catch enough for their families.
A second project aims to educate fishermen on good fishing habits including the need to preserve the coral reefs, the need to alternate fishing zones, introducing them to fresh water fish farming and developing a culture of returning to sea any small fish caught. The third project looks to help young mothers care for their sick babies. Because of disease, poor diet and hygiene many babies fall sick and often their mothers are ill prepared to look after them. This project will help identify mothers and babies most at risk and put in place the steps to protect them.
Funds raised will help meet the costs of providing the resources required to run a series of educational workshops that will cater for the specific requirements of all three groups.
